I have spent the majority of my life performing in bands, and so the sonic world of massed winds and percussion has greatly influenced my composing. In writing Granite Flower, I strove to write a piece that would show the power, beauty, and color of the ensemble. The title alludes to the stone-like sonorities of the work, and the way it blossoms out from its simple generative motive; a step down, and then a step back up.
